Diyarbakır (Kurdish: Amed,[2] Zaza: Diyarbekir,[3] Armenian: Տիգրանակերտ, Tigranakert;[4] Syriac: ܐܡܝܕ, romanized: Āmīd[5]) is one of the largest cities in Turkey. Situated on the banks of the Tigris River, it is the administrative capital of the Diyarbakır Province of southeastern Turkey. It is the third-largest city in Turkey’s Southeastern Anatolia Region, after Şanlıurfa and Gaziantep.
Diyarbakır has been a focal point of the conflict between the Turkish state and various Kurdish insurgent groups.[6] Many Kurds view Diyarbakir as the capital of Kurdistan.[7][8]
